Insyte Weekly: Samsung's Innovative Products, Latest Technologies Reshaping Tourism, Burger King Innovates in Nigeria and more
Happy New Year! I’m really excited about sharing the latest stories and emerging trends with you in 2025. I believe this year we will see even more companies taking giant leaps within their industries. Here’s a breakdown of some of the week’s top stories.
Media & Entertainment
Samsung Electronics America has announced its 2025 lineup of Smart Monitors, Odyssey Gaming Monitors, and ViewFinity Monitors, set to debut at CES on January 5. These models introduce AI features, innovative form factors, and industry-first OLED sizes, catering to users across work, gaming, and creative applications. David Phelps, Head of Samsung’s Display Division, highlighted the company’s commitment to advancing display technology through features like new size options and groundbreaking refresh rates, ensuring enhanced productivity, gaming, and entertainment experiences for all users.
Spotify has introduced the Spotify Partner Program, a monetization system for creators in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, aimed at helping them build sustainable businesses. The program provides revenue streams through payouts from Spotify Premium video engagement and ad monetization on Spotify Free and other podcast platforms. It enhances the user experience by offering ad-free video viewing for Premium users while allowing creators flexibility in monetizing their content. Since its announcement, over 65% of eligible creators have enrolled, with participants praising its potential to grow audiences and revenue. Spotify is also investing in video integration, including short-form podcast clips, which have proven 33% more effective than previews in engaging listeners. This initiative underscores Spotify's commitment to innovation and supporting creators.
Edtech
As reported by Lee Soo-Jung, The Korean Ministry of Education has announced plans to integrate "AI textbooks"—tablet-based apps offering personalized learning—into classrooms from 2025 to 2028. These AI tools, covering subjects like English, math, and science, will tailor content to students' comprehension levels and allow instructors to monitor performance. Despite the Ministry's push, the National Assembly recently downgraded AI textbooks to supplementary materials, limiting state funding and leaving their adoption at the discretion of schools. Critics, including educators and students, remain sceptical about costs, estimated at $1.3 billion to $6.6 trillion over four years, and the potential for deepening educational inequalities without equitable access.
Fintech
According to Mitrade, the fintech industry is poised for a resurgence after enduring a challenging "fintech winter." With easing regulations under the Trump administration, crypto payments are gaining mainstream traction, stablecoins are revolutionizing cross-border transactions, and fintech stocks are rebounding. Major players like Stripe and PayPal are investing heavily in stablecoins to streamline global payments, while startups like YellowCard are innovating to reduce costly wire transfers. However, some, like Airwallex, remain cautious due to regulatory uncertainties. On the regulatory front, Trump’s administration is reshaping the landscape, potentially scaling back oversight bodies like the CFPB, which had previously cracked down on fintech innovation. This regulatory shift is expected to embolden startups to experiment and innovate without fear of sudden policy changes, marking a significant turning point for the industry.
AI
Dan Milmo cites that researchers at the University of Cambridge warn that AI tools could reshape online interactions by manipulating audiences into making decisions, from purchasing products to influencing political choices. A study from Cambridge’s Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence highlights the emergence of an “intention economy,” where AI systems predict, steer, and sell human intentions to companies for profit. The report suggests large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, could use behavioural and psychological data to anticipate and influence users’ decisions in real-time. For example, an AI might ask if a user wants to book a movie ticket based on prior conversations, dynamically tailoring suggestions to match personal profiles. This capability could allow advertisers and businesses to exploit human intent for commercial gain. Furthermore, the study raises concerns about the societal impacts of such practices, including threats to free elections, a free press, and fair competition.
Tourism
As reported by Samaya Dharmaraj, Vietnam’s tourism industry is undergoing a significant digital transformation, supported by its robust digital infrastructure and a high rate of internet and social media usage. The integration of technologies such as IoT, AI, VR/AR, and big data is enhancing travel experiences and streamlining operations. Tools like e-wallets, online travel agencies, and digital maps have become essential for modern travellers while emerging solutions such as e-tickets and smart hotel services are gaining traction. Collaborative efforts among tourism boards, technology providers, and local businesses are fostering a more dynamic ecosystem, with initiatives focusing on sustainability and efficiency. With 15.8 million international visitors in the first 11 months of 2024—41% more than the same period in 2023—Vietnam is leveraging digital innovation to remain competitive. Continued investment in technology, coupled with efforts to improve digital literacy and infrastructure, positions Vietnam as a model for emerging markets and a leading destination in the digital era.
According to TTW, in 2025, the global tourism industry is poised to embrace a renewed focus on the relationship between peace and tourism, recognizing its potential to promote cultural understanding, sustainable development, and peace-building. Initiatives and discussions in late 2024 brought together over 20 global leaders to explore how tourism can foster friendship and harmony, even amid geopolitical tensions. Examples such as Rwanda, Ireland, and Mekong countries showcase tourism’s role in post-conflict recovery. The UNWTO’s 2024 World Tourism Day theme, "Tourism and Peace," reinforced the sector’s unique ability to bridge divides. At COP29, over 50 governments signed a declaration to align tourism with climate-friendly goals, emphasizing the sector’s broader social and environmental responsibility. Moving forward, the industry is set to focus on promoting responsible travel, cross-cultural exchanges, and sustainable practices, ultimately transforming tourism into a powerful force for peace.
Restaurant
As reported by Kingsley Okoh, Burger King Nigeria has launched Africa’s first shipping container drive-through restaurant, marking a significant innovation in the fast-food sector on the continent. This milestone introduces a cost-effective and efficient restaurant model, featuring stacked 40-foot and 20-foot containers for seamless drive-thru service and dine-in options. Located on Toyin Street, Lagos, the new outlet was strategically positioned to capitalize on high foot traffic and is expected to create jobs and drive community development. Since entering the Nigerian market in 2021, Burger King has rapidly expanded, with 21 restaurants opened within 36 months, solidifying Nigeria as its largest market in West Africa. Managing Director Rushdi Ibrahim emphasized affordability and accessibility while maintaining quality as central to the brand’s strategy. The company also plans to introduce solar-powered and fully renewable energy restaurants to enhance sustainability. Future expansions aim to balance premium offerings with affordability, demonstrating Burger King's commitment to innovation and economic development in Nigeria.
