Insyte Weekly: Microsoft's AI Agents, Instagram & Spotify's New Partnership and More

Media & Entertainment

Erick Wesley announced that Instagram and Spotify have launched a new feature that enhances how users engage with music by allowing Instagram users to add songs they find on the app directly to their Spotify library. Now, when users encounter a song in an Instagram post or Story, they can simply tap a new button next to the song preview player to save it instantly to Spotify. This seamless integration eliminates the need to switch between apps, making it easier to save music for future listening. Once added, the song appears in both the “Liked Songs” playlist and the “Your Library” on Spotify. To use the feature, users need to link their Spotify and Instagram accounts, and the update will be rolled out globally for both iOS and Android users.

Wesley Poole reported that Netflix recently shut down its AAA gaming studio in Southern California, a decision that led to the exit of key developers, including Overwatch’s former executive producer Chacko Sonn, Halo's creative director Joseph Staten, and Rafael Grassetti, former art director for God of War. This move has raised questions about Netflix's long-term goals in the gaming industry, especially given the studio’s original ambition to produce high-budget, multiplatform games and unique IPs. The shutdown signifies a strategic shift for Netflix, which has primarily focused on mobile games, many of which tie directly into popular Netflix shows like Emily in Paris and Squid Game. Despite Netflix’s growing library of over 100 games, including hit titles from outside developers, gaming remains a small fraction of the company’s focus.

Fintech

According to Reuters, Shein has launched its first branded credit card in partnership with Mexican fintech company Stori, targeting the expanding e-commerce and credit markets in Mexico and Latin America. This collaboration aims to make Shein’s low-cost fashion more accessible to Mexican consumers, particularly those who have historically had limited access to credit. The card, issued as a Mastercard, will offer reward points redeemable on Shein's website, with double points on clothing purchases, encouraging customer loyalty and increased spending.

AI

As reported by Skyler Ware, researchers at Penn State University have developed an "electronic tongue" powered by AI that can detect food safety and freshness, with potential applications in monitoring expired beverages and identifying contaminants. The innovative system combines an ion-sensitive field-effect transistor to sense chemical ions in liquids with an artificial neural network that interprets this data, mimicking the human brain's taste-processing region. The AI model initially used set parameters to determine acidity levels with about 91% accuracy, but when it autonomously defined its parameters, accuracy improved to over 95%. Testing on various drinks showed the system could differentiate similar beverages, assess milk quality, detect spoiled juice, and even identify harmful chemicals like PFAS in water. The electronic tongue's accuracy was bolstered by Shapley Additive Explanations, which helped researchers understand the AI's decision-making process by highlighting the factors it prioritized.

Microsoft announced it is advancing its AI capabilities with Microsoft 365 Copilot. Through Copilot Studio, now entering public preview, businesses can create autonomous AI agents customized to their workflows. These agents, already tested by companies like McKinsey and Thomson Reuters, are designed to assist in sales, finance, and supply chain operations, boosting efficiency by taking over repetitive tasks. For example, the Sales Qualification Agent helps prioritize sales leads, while the Supplier Communications Agent autonomously manages supply chain disruptions. All agents are built with data protection and security features, ensuring robust governance as AI becomes integral to business operations. This launch represents Microsoft’s commitment to supporting "AI-first" business processes, helping companies gain a competitive edge with customized, autonomous digital assistants.

Tourism

According to the Times of India, Indonesia has introduced a visa-free policy for citizens from 96 countries, including the USA, Japan, UK, UAE, and Mexico, as part of its strategy to boost tourism. This policy, along with economic growth and improved infrastructure, has led to a substantial rise in international arrivals, with 1.15 million tourists visiting in May 2024—a 20.11% increase compared to the previous year. Most visitors come from neighbouring countries like Malaysia, Australia, and Singapore, underscoring Indonesia's role as a regional travel hub. With popular destinations like Bali and Jakarta, enhanced international flights, and hospitality services, the country has become increasingly accessible and attractive. The tourism sector, which contributes about 6% to Indonesia's GDP, plays a critical role in the economy, supporting jobs and fostering sustainable tourism practices.

Retail

According to Brendon Peterson, South Africa’s online grocery sector is experiencing rapid growth, with projections estimating it will reach R80 billion ($5 billion USD) by 2026 and potentially R120-130 billion by 2029. This expansion reflects a major shift in consumer behaviour, particularly among middle and upper-class shoppers, and aligns with forecasts predicting e-commerce users will nearly double to 21.52 million by 2029. A rise in mobile commerce is propelling growth, with smartphone shopping leading the way, prompting retailers to prioritize mobile-first strategies. Demographic changes reveal an expanding older customer base, showing broader market acceptance. New players like Yassir are also intensifying competition with aggressive promotions. Entrepreneurs have notable opportunities in underserved regions, driven by increasing demand for personalized shopping and convenient delivery. This shift towards digital commerce, especially in online groceries, signals a fundamental reshaping of the country’s retail landscape.
