Insyte Weekly: Google Invests $15 Million to Improve Government Workers' AI Skills, Warner Bros' Plans to Take Gaming to New Heights and More

Amid all the buzz surrounding the launch of Tesla’s new humanoid robot, you would be forgiven for missing other headline-grabbing events in the business world. But we have got you covered, here’s our breakdown of some of the week’s top stories.

Media & Entertainment

As reported by Mandy Dalugdug, French President Emmanuel Macron has raised concerns about the fairness of music streaming payments, highlighting how artists with average followings are under-compensated compared to those with large followings. He pointed out the disparity in how streaming platforms like Spotify prioritize high-play artists, leaving many musicians, including French singers Étienne Daho and Barbara Pravi, underpaid. This concern aligns with broader discussions within the music industry, especially following Spotify's move to stop paying royalties for tracks with fewer than 1,000 annual plays. Macron's remarks come after France introduced a 1.2% levy on streaming platforms in early 2024, intended to fund French music initiatives through organizations like the Centre National de la Musique (CNM). The tax has faced criticism from streaming companies, with Spotify raising subscription prices in response.

Meanwhile, Spotify has expanded its music video feature, initially launched in beta for Premium subscribers in 12 markets, to 85 more markets. This allows even more users to experience the visual side of music with artists like Charli XCX, LISA, and Fireboy DML. Music videos on Spotify have been shown to deepen fan engagement, increasing the likelihood of users streaming, saving, or sharing songs after watching. Along with the rollout, new features have been added, including video indicators on tracks, easier search functions, and seamless switching between audio and video modes. This expansion aligns with Spotify's broader efforts to enhance user experience by offering tools like Countdown Pages, Clips, and Live Events, with plans to continue growing the music video catalogue.

According to Charming Holiday, Warner Bros. has filed a patent for a new software system that would allow passengers on various transit vehicles—such as planes, trains, and buses—to play video games together using a shared interface. This system would collect user data, such as interests and moods, and generate custom multiplayer games tailored to the duration of the trip. The patent, published on October 10, showcases Warner Bros.' focus on advancing gaming technology, employing machine-learning algorithms to enhance the gaming experience. While the system could revolutionize in-transit entertainment, there's no certainty it will be fully developed and released. Warner Bros.' filing aligns with the broader industry trend of exploring new ways to integrate gaming into everyday life.

Edtech

As reported by Zawya, the Emirates College for Advanced Education (ECAE) is set to release key innovations, including AI-driven tools like the Digital Human Assistant and Smart Educational Assistant Chatbot, which offer personalized support to students and educators. The college will also introduce VR-based platforms like RiskVenture in the Metaverse, simulating real-world risk management scenarios, and Immersive Metaverse Journey into Sustainability, which engages learners in sustainability practices. The Gamified AI Learning Experience Quest brings gamification into education, motivating learners with challenges and rewards.

Fintech

Stripe is reportedly in advanced negotiations to acquire Bridge, a fintech platform specializing in stablecoin solutions, as part of its strategy to integrate digital currencies into its payment offerings. Bridge, launched in August 2023, has quickly gained traction by offering streamlined cross-border transactions and treasury management through stablecoins like USDT and USDC. The acquisition aligns with Stripe’s recent move to enable merchants to accept stablecoins, positioning the company to expand its capabilities in the growing stablecoin market. If finalized, the deal would strengthen Stripe’s competitive edge in the digital payments space, especially as rivals like Visa and Robinhood develop their own crypto solutions.

AI

Google is investing $15 million in two key public sector organizations, the Partnership for Public Service and InnovateUS, to enhance AI skills within the U.S. government workforce. The Partnership for Public Service will receive $10 million to create the Center for Federal AI, which will launch in 2025 and train government employees in AI leadership and responsible usage. This initiative aims to prepare federal workers, from interns to executives, to leverage AI in serving the public effectively.

InnovateUS, which has already trained over 40,000 public sector workers, will receive $5 million to expand its AI training programs to more than 100,000 workers across 30 states. By offering free AI courses and coaching, InnovateUS helps state and local governments close skills gaps and improve service delivery. These efforts are part of Google.org's broader $75 million AI Opportunity Fund, which seeks to empower public sector professionals with essential AI skills to address societal challenges like healthcare, infrastructure, and public safety.

Tourism

According to ATTA, SITA, the IT provider for the air transport industry, and Innovate UK have launched a global innovation challenge to help regional airports in Africa reduce their carbon emissions by 20% by optimizing aircraft turnaround times. The challenge seeks scalable, cost-effective solutions specifically tailored to the needs of smaller airports with less complex infrastructure. Innovators stand to receive up to GBP25,000 in seed funding and the chance to work on trial projects with SITA. The initiative aims to cut CO2 emissions caused by auxiliary power units and enhance operational efficiency, which is vital for African airports facing rising air transport demand.

According to WEF, Cabo Verde is capitalizing on the Digital Nomad trend by positioning itself as a prime destination for digital nomads. The country’s investment in digital infrastructure, such as undersea fibre optic cables, is part of a broader strategy to diversify its economy and reduce reliance on seasonal tourism. Cabo Verde’s Remote Working Cabo Verde program aims to attract digital nomads while fostering innovation and entrepreneurship in local communities. The influx of nomads brings financial benefits, drives infrastructure development, and encourages a cultural exchange of skills. Cabo Verde’s vision is to build a sustainable, inclusive digital economy that attracts foreign talent and empowers locals, positioning the country as a model for other Small Island Developing States.
